The American Society of Home Inspectors (ASHI), founded in 1976, is North America’s oldest and most respected professional society of home inspectors. ASHI’s goals have always been to build customer awareness of the importance of a quality home inspection and enhance the professionalism of home inspectors.

All ASHI members are required to abide by the ASHI Code of Ethics, which specifically forbids home inspectors from active brokerage or sale of real estate, or performing repairs on homes that they inspect. ASHI members also agree to perform and report inspections in accordance with the ASHI Standards of Practice. Not only is the ASHI logo widely regarded as THE mark of a professional home inspector, its use by the ASHI membership is also carefully controlled.

There are three designations of active professional home inspector membership in ASHI®. These ASHI® membership categories are as follows:

ASHI Certified Inspectors— Inspectors in this category have:

• Passed the National Home Inspector Examination and ASHI's Standards and Ethics Examination.
• Had inspection reports successfully verified for compliance with ASHI's Standards of Practice.
• Submitted valid proof of performance of atleast 250 fee-paid home inspections that meet or exceed the ASHI Standards of Practice.

ASHI Associates w/ Logo— Inspectors in this category have:

• Passed the National Home Inspector Examination and ASHI's Standards and Ethics Examination.
• ASHI has verified performance of 50 fee-paid inspections in substantial compliance with the Standards of Practice.
• Had inspection reports successfully verified for compliance with ASHI's Standards of Practice.
• Submitted valid proof of performance of atleast 250 fee-paid home inspections that meet or exceed the ASHI Standards of Practice.

Associates— Inspectors in this category have:

• Just joined ASHI and may be new to the inspection profession or may be a seasoned inspector who has not yet completed ASHI's requirements to move up in membership.

The National Association of Home Inspectors, Inc. (NAHI) was established in 1987 as a nonprofit association to promote and develop certified and licensed home inspectors in the professional home inspection industry. The National Association of Home Inspectors strives to promote excellence and professionalism in the Home Inspection industry; to provide a home inspector standards of practice and a code of ethics for home inspectors in the USA. Our national home inspector association also educates its home inspector members and informs the public of the benefits and scope of a professional home inspection. NAHI Home Inspectors must meet strict membership requirements and are held to the highest Standards of Practice in the home inspector industry. NAHI Home Inspectors continue to build their knowledge each year by attending home inspector educational events.

NAHI offers different membership levels for inspectors with varying levels of training and experience.  Please take this opportunity to review NAHI's membership levels and their requirements:

NAHI Certified Real Estate Inspector (NAHI CRI) Membership:  NAHI CRI members must complete a minimum of 250 full fee-paid home inspections and pass the NAHI CRI Exam. NAHI CRI members must submit copies of three (3) completed home inspection reports for review each year and complete a minimum of sixteen (16) Continuing Education Units (CEU's) each calendar year. 

Regular Membership:  Regular Members must complete a minimum of 100 full fee-paid home inspections and pass the NAHI Certified Real Estate Inspector (NAHI CRI) Exam, National Home Inspector Exam (NHIE) or California Real Estate Inspection Association (CREIA) Exam. In addition, Regular Members must complete a minimum of eight (8) Continuing Education Units (CEU's) each calendar year. 

Associate Membership:  Associate Members must successfully complete a 40-hour comprehensive home inspection training program or complete of a minimum of twenty (20) full fee-paid home inspections. In addition, Associate Members must complete a minimum of eight (8) Continuing Education Units (CEU's) each calendar year.  Home inspectors can maintain their Associate Member status for up to two (2) years prior to upgrading to the Regular Member status.
